This guide is sponsored by the American Economic Association. N.W. Posthumus Institute (Catholic University Nijmegen) The homepage of the Netherlands Research Institute and Graduate School on economic and social history. On these pages you can find more information about the organisation, the research programmes and the training programme of the Institute.
The Ester Network (Catholic University Nijmegen) The Ester programme aims to create a European platform for postgraduate teaching and offers advanced theoretical and methodological training of high international quality to postgraduates working on economic and social history.
Netherlands Institute for Scientific Information Services NIWI aims at providing scientific information, in the scientific fields of biomedicine, social sciences, history and Dutch language and literature. In addition, NIWI provides information about research and researchers in The Netherlands, in all scientific fields.
International Institute of Social History The International Institute of Social History (IISH) was founded in 1935 and is one of the world's largest documentary and research institutions in the field of social history in general and the history of the labour movement in particular. Most of the collections are open to the public.
European Business History Association (EBHA) The EBHA was established as the professional body for individuals interested in the development of business and management in Europe from the earliest time to the present day. The Association aims to promote research, teaching and general awareness of all aspects of European business and management history.
Netherlands Economic History Archive (NEHA) The Netherlands Economic History Archive (NEHA), established in 1914, has as its objective the collection, preservation, ordering and processing of source material of importance for economic history in the broadest sense.

NBER Macrohistory Database This extensive data set that covers all aspects of the pre-WWI and interwar economies, including production, construction, employment, money, prices, asset market transactions, foreign trade, and government activity. Many series are highly disaggregated, and many exist at the monthly or quarterly frequency. The data set covers the US, France, Germany and the UK.
NBER Data Links Some interesting links to online data series.
Financial Datafinder (Ohio state university) Directory of downloadable data sets. Mainly financial issues like stock returns and interest rates.
Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (Nederland) (Only in Dutch)

AHDS History Based at the University of Essex, AHDS History (formerly known as the History Data Service) is one of the five centres of the Arts and Humanities Data Service. AHDS History collects, preserves, and promotes the use of digital resources, which result from or support historical research, learning, and teaching. Its collection includes over 600 separate studies relating to a number of historical, economic and social issues, ranging in time from the late tenth century to the twentieth century.
The Historical Sample of the Netherlands The Historical Sample of the Netherlands offers a representative sample of about 80.000 people born in the Netherlands during the period 1812-1922. It is a unique tool for research in Dutch history and demography.
United States Historical Census Data Browser Presents data which describes the people and the economy of the US for each state and county from 1790 to 1960.
Catasto Study (Italy) This site provides access to the raw data and documentation files for the Census and Property Survey for Florentine Domains and the City of Verona in Fifteenth Century Italy, also known as the Catasto study.
National Survey of Families and Households (USA) A national survey of approximately 13000 US households, conducted in three waves. Data was gathered in 1987-88 and in 1992-94. A new survey is conducted right now (2002).
Council of European Social Science Data Archives CESSDA promotes the acquisition, archiving and distribution of electronic data for social science teaching and research in Europe.
MIMAS Macro-Economic Time Series Data (not free!) MIMAS hosts a number of major international and UK national economic related databanks. If you are a member of a UK higher or further education establishment, you may access these databanks over the Internet through MIMAS free of charge as a end-user.
The IISH List of Datafiles of Historical Prices and Wages The International Institute of Social History (NL) tries to set up a network of scholars working with historical price and wage data and to establish a moderated list of datafiles of this kind of data.
Demography and Population Studies An internet guide to census data and various data servers.
The Database of Irish Historical Statistics The Database of Irish Historical Statistics holds recurrent statistics for Ireland for the nineteenth and twentieth centuries collected from a variety of printed census sources.
Railroads in Spain and Latin America (Only in Spanish) The Fundacion de los Ferrocarriles Españoles has published on line a statistical database about railroads in Spain and Latin America.
Russian and Soviet Economic Data The objective of this site is to collect a reliable historical statistics characterizing the Russian and Soviet economy and to make it readily available to all the interested persons.

He compares the economic effect of the Internet to various other technological revolutions, especially the introduction of steam power in the early 19th century.
